A new train station has started welcoming passengers in Melbourne's west. West Tarneit Station opened its doors on Sunday. For people living in the suburbs around it, the stop brings a new way to reach the city centre, Geelong, and the stations in between.
The station sits on the Wyndham Vale line. Trains from here run toward the city in one direction and toward Geelong in the other. Commuters, students, and families now have another option for the daily trip to work, school, and appointments.

Where the new station sits on the line
West Tarneit Station is the newest stop on the Wyndham Vale line. The line begins at Southern Cross Station in the heart of Melbourne. It runs through Footscray and Sunshine before stopping at Tarneit and then West Tarneit. From there, trains continue to Wyndham Vale and head toward Little River and Geelong.
That position gives the station a useful dual role. Passengers can travel inbound toward the city centre or outbound toward the regional stops beyond Wyndham Vale. The line carries a mix of local and longer-distance trips, so the new stop serves more than one kind of journey.
For residents of Melbourne's west, the station adds another boarding point on a line that was already busy. It sits between Tarneit and Wyndham Vale, which spreads passengers across more stops and gives some people a shorter trip to their nearest train. Until now, many people in this part of the west had to travel to Tarneit or Wyndham Vale to catch a train. The new stop brings the railway closer to home.
What passengers will find at the station
The station has been built with accessibility at its centre. Both of its platforms are fully accessible. Ramps and stairs link the two platforms, and a pedestrian underpass lets people move safely from one side of the tracks to the other.
The underpass is a key part of the design. It lets people cross between platforms without walking across the tracks at ground level. This layout means the station works well for people with prams, wheelchairs, or limited mobility, and for anyone carrying bags or shopping. The station is designed so that arriving by car, bus, bike, or on foot all lead naturally to the platforms.
Parking, buses, and bikes
The precinct includes a car park with 400 spaces. Drivers can leave the car there before boarding a train into the city. A four-bay bus interchange sits alongside the car park, which makes changing between train and bus straightforward.
Cyclists are catered for as well. The station provides secure bicycle storage and hoops for people who prefer to ride to the train. These touches make it easier to leave the car at home for shorter trips, and they give riders somewhere safe to park a bike while they travel.
More trains and more buses
The opening of West Tarneit Station brings more than a new platform. The bus network around Tarneit is growing at the same time. More than 1,100 additional bus services are being added to the network each week.
Two routes are changing to serve the new station. A new Route 186 runs between Tarneit Station and West Tarneit Station via Dohertys Road. Route 182 now runs more often and travels through the new station on its way. Together, these changes give residents more ways to reach the rail line without driving.
The new Route 186 is a direct link between the two Tarneit stations. It gives people a simple way to move between them or to connect to a different service. The extra frequency on Route 182 also means shorter waits for passengers who use it.
The trains are getting bigger too. Larger trains have been added to the Wyndham Vale line. During the morning and evening peaks, this lifts capacity by up to 50 per cent. That means more seats and more standing room when the line is busiest, which should ease crowding on peak services. The extra capacity is timed to the busiest parts of the day, so morning commuters and evening commuters stand to gain the most.
A precinct still taking shape
Work around the station is continuing. Landscaping crews plan to plant more than 65,000 native trees, plants, and grasses across the precinct. New seating is on the way, along with walking and cycling paths. The aim is a station that works as part of its neighbourhood, not just a place to catch a train.
The new walking and cycling paths will connect the station to the surrounding streets. That should make it easier to reach the platforms on foot or by bike once the work is finished.
A major investment for the west
Member for Tarneit Dylan Wight described the new station as a major investment in transport for Melbourne's west. The project adds to the rail network serving the City of Wyndham and the wider region. It gives commuters another choice on a line that already links the city to Geelong.
